Positions of the Vice President and Minister in the Office of the President still remain vacant after the major reshuffle.

The president’s list of the names for the cabinet showed some ministries have been merged while General Education and Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management ministries have been phased out.

The list that was read over the state-owned South Sudan Radio and TV comprised largely new faces.

Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk, whose state of Jonglei is troubled by inter-communal violence and a rebellion led by David Yau Yau, is the nation’s new Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs.

Stephen Dhieu Dau maintained his position in the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining. He will also be responsible for the environment following the merger of the two ministries.

Former governor for Western Equatoria State, Jema Nunu Kumba returned to the Ministry of Land, Housing and Physical Planning while Kwong Danhier who has been acting Minister for Labour, Public Service and Human Resource Development becomes a fully-fledged minister.

Martin Elia Lomoro, who hails from the opposition South Sudan Democratic Forum (SSDF) political party, has been named the new minister for cabinet affairs, replacing Deng Alor who had earlier been removed together with Finance Minister Kosti Manibe Ngai over a botched spending deal. Lomoro was minister for Animal Resources and Fisheries in the outgoing cabinet.
