In independence countdown, new phone code for south still a mystery

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) says it will allocate a new telephone code to Southern Sudan 15 days after official independence takes effect on 9 July.

Juma Stephen Lugga, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Telecommunication and Postal Services, said the ITU Secretary General has considered the request by the ministry and will give Southern Sudan a new three digit-code after the UN recognises the country as an independent state, replacing the +249 code currently used by the rest of the world for all of Sudan.

With six telecommunication companies currently operating in Southern Sudan, the new code might translate to some service interruptions for telephone customers, as Marvis Birungi reports from Juba:
