The excitement about the birth of a new african state is diluted by the repeated acts of violence throughout Southern Sudan ahead of the independence celebrations on 9 July. The continuous eruptions of clashes is threatening the stability of the soon-to-be independent country, claiming increasing numbers of casualties.

The Sudan People\'s Liberation Army (SPLA) faces the security challenges and the recurrent defections with a mix of diplomacy and military reactions. Failing to find an effective solution to the security problem might cause the stillbirth of the semi-autonomous region.
