Riek Machar Teny was scheduled to arrive in Juba this morning, Monday, April 18 to take up the post of first Vice President, a key part of the peace process aimed at ending more than two years of civil war.
Speaking to the press the SPLM-IO spokesman William Ezekiel said Machar’s delay is due to “logistical reasons”, adding that Machar’s arrival is now rescheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, April 19.
Ezekiel also indicated that delay may be related to a failure to obtain a flight clearance for the SPLA-IO Chief of Staff who was scheduled to arrive with Machar and that neither the government of South Sudan nor the government of Ethiopia have anything to do with the delay.
In the over two years of violent conflict between government forces and forces loyal to rebel leader Riek Machar more than two million people have been displaced and tens of thousands were killed in the fighting.
