Renewed conflict in the Nuba Mountains has prompted many young cattle herders to carry arms again.

The Nuba people are mainly farmers and cattle herders. Young cow herders spend their days grazing their cows, drinking milk and practicing nuba-wrestling.

There is a saying in the Nuba Mountains that one should not fear a man drunk on marissa (a local beer), but rather a man drunk on milk”.
