Closure of 22 private universities leaves many students desperate

Ten months after South Sudan gained independence, hopes and expectations of many South Sudanese students are fading.

 
The situation in the public universities prompted many South Sudanese to pursue their studies in private institutions, which are now shut down, leaving the students with no access to higher education.

Juba University’s doors still closed
The only public university in Juba remains closed due to ethnically motivated clashes amongst students, which took place almost three months ago.

All public universities in the country face huge challenges such as the limited number of lecturers, the lack of hostels for students, the shortage of lecture halls and poor sanitation. 

The situation in the public universities prompted many South Sudanese to pursue their studies in private institutions, which are now shut down, leaving the students with no access to higher education.
