‘Civil Society needs to be part of the negotiations’

A new group called ‘Citizens for Peace and Justice’ -- comprised of civil society activists and academics -- calls on conflicting parties to allow humanitarian organisations access to people displaced by violence.

The group recently met in Nairobi, Kenya and issued a statement calling all parties to the conflict to protect civilians in internally displaced camps and areas under their control.

The group also called for a citizen-led national dialogue to address all issues facing the country and reconcile the various communities.

Further, the group wants the government to strengthen the country’s institutions including the legislature and judiciary, and to professionalise the army in order to prevent a similar crisis in future.
