South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has declared a unilateral cessation of hostilities on July 11, following days of heavy fighting in the capital Juba. Machar has subsequently declared a ceasefire, ordering his forces to stop fighting.

“It is good news that it [the ceasefire] is holding. This morning there has not been any gunshot anywhere,” Ateny said when speaking to journlaists in Juba. He further said that “now is the time for diplomacy”.
