The arrests come amidst heavy clashes in the ethnically divided border state, where fighting between units of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and northern forces have triggered a humanitarian crisis.
In Kadugli, the state capital, the UN staff had been trapped in the compound of the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) for about a week.
Reports suggest the northern forces were planning another attack on areas where SPLA units are suspected to be located.
