Trials of a new waste management system in Juba will begin soon in the neighbourhoods of Atla Bara, in Kator, and Jebel market.

The system, which was developed with the help of Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the national Ministry of Environment and the Juba City Council, involves a fixed time, fixed station” way of rubbish collecting.

As happens in other countries, residents will receive rubbish containers and be told where to bring the filled containers, and at what time, every week. From there, the rubbish bags will be picked up.

As Juba has grown, waste management has become more of an issue than ever. We are certainly in need of a new system to keep the environment clean,” Juba resident, Abraham Ding, says.

The system, which has been in development since last October, will certainly require the cooperation of locals, JICA explained.

Public awareness will make this project successful,” says Biar Reec, a Jebel Market resident who welcomed the idea.

However Atla Bara resident, Deng Aguer Bior, said he believed the system could work but pointed out that people did not always follow the rules.
