Thousands in Juba witness the SPLA’s 29th anniversary
South Sudan marked the 29th anniversary of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army’s (SPLA) formation yesterday, May 16. It was the first commemoration since the country gained independence last year in July.

South Sudan’s history is marked by bloody conflicts, leading to the loss of millions of lives and untold numbers of people wounded. Millions of others were forced to flee their homes during renewed clashes that continue today.

In tribute to this date, people across the country commemorate the so called ‘SPLA Day’ every year.
