County Commissioner Dau Akoi Jurkuch said the disarmament campaign targeted the district of Nyuak Payam in two sections of the community involved in inter-clan fighting that left 47 people wounded.

Over 90 guns were seized by the SPLA Division 8 command.

Within one week this month, Jurkuch said, over 90 guns were seized by the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) Division 8 command at camps where youth from Dachuek and Ayual groups were tending cattle. The process was hampered when many of the youth suspected of gun possession fled or resisted surrendering their weapons when they were intercepted, he added.

Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk told the media that he ordered the immediate confiscation of small arms from unauthorised civilians on 15 March in Twic East, where inter-clan fighting had occurred a week earlier.

A call for disarmament by the Sudanese civil society.

Governor Juuk said the SPLA returned to re-launch the disarmament operation because a similar campaign carried out two years ago proved incomplete: All the people in those two clans killed (this month) died of gunshot wounds.”

Juuk reiterated the disarmament effort was in line with the policy of the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) to collect small arms from civilians across the region.

According to County Commissioner Jurkuch, the process has been successful. There is no fear of the two communities attacking each other,\" he said, adding that calm has come back to the county.”
