The UK’s African Minister Mark Simmonds and South Sudan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Barnaba Marial Benjamin, sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), November 14.

Signed last Thursday, November 14, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will mean that 19 citizens will be in prison in South Sudan rather than the United Kingdom (UK).

The UK’s African Minister Mark Simmonds said the agreement formed a framework to enable South Sudanese detainees in the UK to return home. We have nineteen South Sudanese detainees”, Mark said.

Thousands of South Sudanese fled around the world during decades of civil war until 2005 and a small number of those are in detention in Europe, Asia and the United States on various charges.

The move was welcomed by South Sudan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Barnaba Marial Benjamin. We are a sovereign state, we take care of our citizens, regardless whether they are criminal,” he said, adding that his country will continue working hand in hand with the British government.
