Residents opened the celebration of the overwhelming vote at Abyei’s Freedom Square with the national anthem of the Republic of South Sudan on Thursday, October 31.
The unilateral Dinka Ngok poll was feared to inflame tensions in the contested and volatile region, claimed by Sudan and South Sudan, as the nomadic Misseriya, who drive their livestock through the area, were not allowed to vote in the symbolic referendum.
