South Sudan adopts transitional constitution

The South Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) has formally approved the transitional constitution, which is expected to serve as the guiding legal document for the new republic for the next six years.

Following last-minute compromises between the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and opposition party members, the constitution will be signed by President Salva Kiir Saturday, when South Sudan becomes officially independent.
