Reuters quoted an anonymous diplomat saying that President Omar al-Bashir had agreed to withdraw the northern Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) from Abyei and approved the deployment of Ethiopian troops to the area.

But after Southern Sudanese President Kiir’s return to Juba from the Ethiopian capital earlier this week, the Minister in the Office of the President had told reporters that the two parties had not reached any agreement over the disputed region, whose official status hangs in the balance.
