Prayers before Election Day - does it help?

Bonifacio Taban
25.04.2024

The last general elections in Sudan took place in 1986, yet after three years General Omar Hassan Al-Bashir took through a coup the power from prime minister Sadig Al-Madi. Therefore all Sudanese people must think of what to do in this critical time of polling process. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) has helped the innocent civilians who are tired of war in Sudan. Now the churches leaders in Southern Sudan are offering their prayer to the almighty God, let there be peaceful demonstration during the polling time.

Every citizen in the country should think wisely so as to elect the leaders which have hope of peace and reconciliation among them. The people of this war torn country, especially in Southern Sudan whose people have faced challenges of very poor services, should keep their heart tidy in the election times. Both Northern and Southern leaders should mediate their partnership by further implementing the CPA.

Some opposition parties have demanded another postponement of the elections which would contradict the CPA implementation once more. So if the elections were postponed again, what do we think will happen in the country? Our brotherly countries who watch the CPA's implementation said let’s follow the rule of CPA signed in 2005, we must abide by the laws. But in the Sudan itself some politicians found it a pride to threaten the international observers.

Take example when president Bashir had been charges of crime of humiliation by the International Criminal Courts. The result of the above President Bashir expelled the none governmental Organization base in Western Darfur out of Sudan. This became the top of all politicians in threatening the International people in Sudan. The African countries that support Bashir of not allowing him to face the International Criminal Courts were from the North and Western Africa.

But I had a question to my fellow African countries, what are your aims of Sudan conflicts since 1983 when the Southern rebels began rebellion in Sudan. Do you consider us as fellow African in Sudan? Or Arab of Sudan. To me even though this election would be conducted in Sudan as free and fair election, two thing will happen either war broke again or Southern Sudan will achieved it independent in 2011 referendum .As I move in Unity State around through my experiences so many people interested in referendum in the next seven month ahead of us.

The issues that the SPLM and other parties’ boycott the next coming weekend polling process is the clear violation of election acts of 2008, the Darfur problem exist before the comprehensive peace agreement sign in 2005. The Darfur rebellion arises in 2003, when the Southern rebels and the Khartoum government mediate peace talks in Naivasha Kenya, have they mention if Darfur problem is not solves we will not sign the peace?

We therefore urge the world to see what is taking place in Sudan, like last week when Omer Hassan El-Bashir launch his election campaigns in Eastern Sudan hold threaten against SPLM to withdraw its candidate Yaser Arman from the position of presidency of the republic, which if SPLM fail to withdraw its candidate, referendum would not be granted accordingly. In Sudan politics there is tension chaos where as one want to die in the seat. `` But there is a say a leaders come a leaders goes’’, in which our leaders has forgotten their citizen right of expression.

As the days are closest to the polling hours some States in Southern Sudan have been found of duplicating the voting slips especially in the Jonglei and Upper Nile State. The Southern Sudan High election Communitee are for further putting more investigation for the multi-practices which occurred in the two States, if found the person should faced the justice or court.
