South Sudan’s supply gateway blocked

The bottleneck between South Sudan and Uganda from Nimule to Bibia (about three kilometres) was flooded in August, blocking a vital lifeline for landlocked South Sudan.

On August 25, business at both Uganda and South Sudan custom points came to a halt, as floods caused by heavy rains prevented people from crossing the border.

Ferdrick Lokule, the Director General of Custom Services said there are no vehicles crossing and when there are no goods and people crossing, there is no business -- we are grossly affected”.

Mustafa Safi, travelling the route between Uganda and South Sudan frequently, blamed the Ugandan government for having shifted the border post form Bibia to Elegu, as Elegu is lower and floods every year”.
