Violence in South Sudan has produced an ever-deepening crisis for this already poverty-stricken nation. Famine, disease and displacement have become part of life. Food security has significantly deteriorated in South Sudan. Staple food prices continue to increase due to high import costs associated with currency depreciation, insecurity and poor road conditions along transportation routes that restrict imports.
Amid these challenges Jacob Toti, the Commissioner of South Sudan’s Morobo County, sees an opportunity to improve the country’s food security and economy. He wants to boost agriculture, saying no one would go hungry again, if his vision is realised, and that the country’s economic crisis would be history.
