Over 170 people are feared dead in an inferno in Mambe Payam, Maridi County of Western Equatoria State, following the explosion of a fuel truck.

The victims are said to have been tapping petrol from a fuel tanker that overturned along Faragsika road on Wednesday, September 16, 2015, when it caught fire and exploded. A source said: “Youths are burnt to ashes and many others are being rushed to Maridi hospital with terrible injuries.” Many victims admitted to hospital are in critical condition and the death toll is expected to rise.

Maridi County Commissioner, Wilson Thomas Yanga told The Niles by phone that the death toll is still increasing. He added that other fire victims are transferred to Juba. “I have no clear information on the declaration of three days of mourning by the state government now, because everybody is busy but that will be later.”

However, the United Nations Radio Miraya confirmed that Caretaker Governor Patrick Raphael Zamoi has declared three days of mourning in the state

South Sudan is currently hit by a fuel crisis with long queues of motorists at filling stations for several hours as a result of scarcity of hard currency (USD) to facilitate the import of fuel.
