Unity State Governor Gai discharged

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit issued a presidential decree on Sunday, July 7, discharging Unity State Governor Taban Deng Gai with immediate effect.

The presidential decree announced by South Sudan’s state-owned TV station, SSTV, provided no explanation why Taban Deng Gai was discharged and replaced by the local leader of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

Political and community leaders speculate about the president’s move, saying Deng has lost favour of the Unity State citizens. Bonifacio Taban has the details:
