Government decides not to celebrate, but to observe

South Sudan announced that it will not celebrate the upcoming fifth anniversary of the country’s independence from Sudan due to the severe economic crisis.

Information Minister Michael Makuei announced the cancellation of this year’s national independence celebrations on June 28, in Juba, saying the government wants to minimise unnecessary spending.
